About Harbor Press

Reference notes on small-press publishing and archival practice for community museums and local history organisations across Canada.

What This Site Is

Harbor Press is a reference site covering three overlapping areas of practice that community archives and small presses in Canada regularly encounter: ISBN registration procedures, print-on-demand production workflows, and digitization standards for heritage collections.

The content here is written for archivists, local historians, museum staff, and community volunteers who are working through the logistics of producing and distributing printed catalogues, or who are beginning or expanding a digitization programme for a small collection.

The site does not represent a publishing organisation, a government body, or a commercial vendor. It is a reference document. Where authoritative external sources exist — Library and Archives Canada, the International ISBN Agency, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative — those sources are cited directly.

Scope

The scope is limited to practices relevant to Canadian publishers and archives. Procedures for ISBN registration through Library and Archives Canada, for instance, differ in detail from those in other countries. Digitization programme guidance from federal and provincial agencies in Canada shapes the framing of that section similarly.

Content is updated as practices and linked standards change. The date shown on each article reflects the most recent review.
